Between 1385 and 1520 nineteen students from Sweden matriculated at the University of Vienna. Most of them returned after a few years of studies but some chose to remain as teachers and as students at one of the higher faculties. The most famous among them is Bero Magni who taught at the Faculty of Arts for more than thirty years. His biography and an account of his personal library are presented here by Erika Kihlman, while Roger Andersson compares one of Bero’s university sermons with contemporary preaching ad populum. In the manuscripts sermo and collatio are both used for ‘sermon’, and these terms and their application are examined by Siegfried Wenzel. Hans Aili makes an analysis of Bero’s command and usage of the Latin language. A comprehensive survey of the other Swedish students and their later careers is made by Olle Ferm in the opening article of this volume.

This book presents research performed within the project Swedish Students at Universities Abroad in the Middle Ages, under the direction of Olle Ferm.
